What we don’t know about the lifelong bond between Bob “Speed” Bryant Jr., and main character  Jimmy Rogers has something to do with the relationship between Red and Speed’s Mother Angela Bryant.

In the movie Speed writes the song “Steady As A Rock” for his girlfriend, Priscilla Lofgren.

Speed was just seventeen at the time of his debut stock car race.  He wound up driving his dad’s race car, because two days before the big race, Bob Sr was working directly under the bell housing of a panel truck at Goldstein’s junkyard. The truck slipped off its blocks. The weight of the car fell right on Bob Sr’s face.

Red Rogers happened to be at Goldstein’s returning a part for his baby sister Louise “Lew” Perkins. Lew is David Perkins‘ Mother. David is Jimmy’s cousin and best friend. David formed The Rhythm Kings.

David and his girlfriend Cathy Carlson die under suspicious circumstances near the end of act two in the movie.

Are their deaths an accident or did someone kill them?

Red dropped the part he was returning to Goldstien’s and began running toward the sound of Bob Sr’s screams. Will Red find the strength needed to single handedly lift the truck before it crushes Bob’s skull?

Just before the race, with America The Beautiful playing over the PA system, Jimmy Rogers and Marie Scappelli kiss for the first time.

The connection between Jimmy and Speed goes back to the relationship between their Fathers.

In fact, Al Goldstein hired Bob Sr to replace Red at Goldstein’s junk yard on Red’s recommendation. Red and Bob Sr have been friends since their High School days. Red left Goldstein’s to go to work at the Langford Factory. In the opening scene of the movie Red is fired at the factory for drinking on the job. In act two, this same factory burns to the ground.

Did Red torch the factory out of revenge? By now you know.
