Paul was David Perkins’ only choice for drummer in The Rhythm Kings and David chose “rhythm” as part of the band’s name primarily because of Paul’s superlative sense of rhythm.
In the movie Can’t Stop It (the first episode in the Jimmy Rogers Chronicles) Paul is going steady with Shinelle Gastrangler. Before Shinelle became Paul’s girlfriend, she was with David Perkins.
In this coming-of-age/murder mystery, Jimmy is wrestling with life’s paramount decision. Whether to live life with a sense of hope and optimism or to live life void of hope and purpose, one filled with tragedy and despair.

In the opening scene of the movie Paul Donaldson, and all the members of The Rhythm Kings are walking with Jimmy Rogers down the High School corridor. They are congratulating Jimmy for taking top honors in the Statesville Chronicles Creative Writing Contest. Jimmy is surrounded by Paul, Bob Bryant, Jr., Degamo Williams, Lenny Goldstein, Henry Flowers, and David Perkins (Jimmy’s cousin and founder of The Rhythm Kings).
Paul’s girlfriend Shinelle Gastrangler makes her first appearance in the movie late in the opening scene. She is a very complicated character and Paul sings three of the original songs that are part of the soundtrack to Can’t Stop It, the movie.
“Cold Baby” depicts how distant and aloft Shinelle can become when her emotions get the best of her. “If Only I Knew” is Paul’s struggle to figure out what Shinelle expects from him.
Finally, we hear the song “Killers Still On The Run” the morning after Shinelle and Paul have a huge fight. Dean Johnson, the principle suspect for the mysterious deaths of David Perkins and his girlfriend Cathy Carlson has escaped from jail. Paul is worried about Shinelle’s safety with a killer on the run.
The deaths of David and Cathy is the first of three reversals in the movie that send Jimmy spiraling down a hole to where Jediah Hargett found him jumping off the top railing of the Langford Bridge.

Following quickly after the sad news about David and Cathy, Jimmy learns that the Langford Factory where he has a part time job has burned to the ground. Later that same day he discovers his girlfriend Marie Scappelli in the arms of another.
Is Jimmy’s Father Red Rogers right, is “life a cruel joke, barely worth living?”

Red has felt this way ever since, in his own Senior year in High School, Red’s Father was killed in an automobile accident while looking for Red. Red was blamed for the death of his own Father.
Up to this point in the movie, Jimmy has tried to walk the line between his mother Esther Rogers‘ optimistic view and his father’s dim outlook on life. Which path will Jimmy choose?
