Louise (Lew) Perkins is Jimmy’s aunt and Red Rogers’ baby sister. She is David Perkins Mother. One of Jimmy Rogers’ earliest memories of his aunt Lew is her closing the hood to the family car and saying to Rich, “O K you can start it now.”
She was a liberated woman decades be for the term existed and could repair a car or truck as well as any man.
David inherited his great talent for music from his mother, Lew. Lew got hers from her mother who, when she was very young played the piano at the silent movies.

In the opening scene of the movie, all the members of The Rhythm Kings are walking with Jimmy Rogers down the High School corridor. They are congratulating Jimmy for taking top honors in the Statesville Chronicles Creative Writing Contest.
Jimmy is surrounded by Bob Bryant, Jr., plays guitar; Degamo Williams, plays bass guitar; Paul Donaldson, the drummer; Henry Flowers, plays keyboards; Lenny Goldstein, plays sax and David Perkins (Jimmy’s cousin), plays lead guitar. All members of the band sing.
David is the founder of The Rhythm Kings. A seven-piece band that practiced and often performed at Professor Remembers Roadhouse & Bakery Café.
Even though David often tried to persuade his cousin Jimmy to pick up the guitar and join The Rhythm Kings, Jimmy never took an interest until he saw Elvis on TV. Jimmy found the guitar his brother Hal left behind when Hal joined the Marines.
Jimmy’s acute, perhaps super human hearing enabled him to learn the guitar quickly by listening to the radio. David was delighted to have Jimmy join The Rhythm Kings at the High School dance. After the dance the band and girlfriends go to Professor Remembers to celebrate.
That is where Jimmy meets Marie Scappelli and falls in love so fast, he wrote “Lickity Split” and talked the band into taking the stage and performing it ad hoc.
Jimmy is hoping it will get Marie’s attention. Will it?

David and his girlfriend Cathy Carlson both die under suspicious circumstances from ingesting antifreeze at Cathy’s birthday party. They thought it was Crème De Menthe.
This is the first of three reversals in the movie that send Jimmy spiraling down to where Jediah Hudson finds him jumping off the top railing of the Langford Bridge.
